Recession - What recession?
OK, it looks like the wheels of commerce are turning
slower and there has already been a bit of gloom and
doom talk on various magic forums.
Like many of you, I have, with 30 years in the business
been through a few economic cycles. Yep and I quite
agree it can be a bit scary when the phone stops ringing,
your percentage of sales drops and worse, booked jobs
get cancelled.
On a practical level, make sure your paper work is up
to scratch in terms of contracts, deposits etc. This
will help smooth the ride a bit. I don't normally always
get deposits, but have changed this policy now.
On a bigger level, this is a time to focus.
Decide where your market is and dominate it.
Think "deep" not "wide".
And use the quite times to practice and prospect!
The greatest sales and marketing tool in the world
is a great show. Use this time wisely and you will be
in a great position to ride the next boom time.

An Untapped market ?
I've mentioned this one before and always get a couple
of grumpy letters from the guys who make buckets of cash
performing in this market exclusively.
It's being Master of Ceremony at weddings and adding your
Magic touch to the procedures.
I get rung constantly by people wanting to book me and
I always say no. I focus exclusively on Corporate work
and this is just not a "fit" for me. The money is very
good, the conditions terrific and of course you get to
hang out with happy festive people.
My colleague Peter Miller has a fantastic book out that
goes step by step through exactly what you would have to
